Once a world super-power, Portugal had long languished in the aftermath of its loss of empire followed by a lengthy fascist dictatorship. But since the return of democracy, the country’s design communities have begun to forge a new national identity, drawing on both their creative heritage and the opportunities for global interaction opened up by the Internet. Although hampered by the current European economic crisis, they are making great strides. Here, we survey the scene through the eyes of five outstanding design units.
