What is the function of a manifesto? Why must architects, doctors, and many professionals swear to an oath, but not graphic designers? Graphic designers have an incredible power to form attitudes and shape decisions. To Be Determined is curious to learn why this is often underestimated — they turn attention to manifestos and oaths in art, design, and other professional practices. Perhaps through this exploration, we can work towards an ethics of design, whether universal or personal. To Be Determined is a discussion group founded by Nicolas Meier and Nimi Einstein in Portland, Oregon. The goals are simple: start conversations, read & share ideas, and bring people together to think critically about design practice. The workshop is being hosted by design practice Civilization at Non-Breaking Space, their non-profit gallery devoted to showcasing important works of graphic design.
